The elderly man struggled slowly across the stage towards the drums. Every step was an effort. Was he in pain or just very stiff? When Ronnie Verrell eventually reached his goal and gently lowered himself onto a stool, the relief in the audience was palpable. At the same moment, Tony Lee and Tony Archer strode onto the stage to be greeted by spontaneous applause.
The auditorium was packed, reflecting the appeal of the Tony Lee Trio to jazz lovers. As the evening progressed, Ronnie played with so much energy and pace that a younger man would have been envious. Tony Archer provided a solid backing on the double bass and Tony Lee demonstrated complete mastery as he improvised on the piano.
To quote from the review in the Surrey Advertiser:-
Sadly, Ronnie Verrell died the following year. Tony Lee agreed to return for a repeat performance at Charterhouse in February, 2004. He was taken ill a few weeks before and never recovered. The jazz world is poorer for their departure.
The 2004 Jazz Concert was cancelled and, although we shall never again enjoy a live performance by the Tony Lee Trio, perhaps one day we may discover jazz musicians of similar calibre who are prepared to play for Woolsack at a charity event. Until that day, we shall have to be content with memories of their unforgettable music.
Money raised by the Jazz Concert in 2001 was donated to the British Kidney Patient Association to assist with the purchase of a dialysis machine..
Kidney patients may have to face four hours treatment on a dialysis machine three times a week, week after week, month after month. Their illness affects their ability to work and finances are often a major problem
The Association assists kidney patients by supplying literature and grants for education, domestic expenses, holidays and travel.
Life membership of the BKPA is offered to all kidney patients who are British citizens and who reside in the UK.
The BKPA also publicises the need for kidney donors and lobbies for more and improved facilities for kidney patients.
