Woolsack supports Sport Godalming’s Go for Gold initiative
In November, the club hosted members of Sport Godalming at its weekly meeting. Officers and members of the organisation came with two internationally recognised local athletes, Chris Scott and Liz Ng, (pictured centre left) who are receiving support under the Go for Gold funding scheme.
Together with Kayaker, Paul Wycherley, and Para Dressage Rider, Nicki Thompson, Chris Scott, who throws the discus, and Liz Ng, who fences, are four local athletes who are in serious contention for places on the GB Olympic team for London 2012.
The Woolsack club has been an enthusiastic supporter of this initiative since it was started 4 years ago, with the aim of providing essential financial assistance to our talented local athletes to help them train for a place in the GB Olympic teams. During the evening, the club’s President, Tony Luscombe, presented a cheque for £500 to David Anderson, Chairman of Sport Godalming.
During the meeting, Chris and Liz were interviewed by Michael O’Sullivan and they provided the club with a fascinating insight into the remarkably strenuous and time consuming training regime necessary to become a top flight athlete, as well as the personal sacrifices they have each had to make.
We all wish them every success in their endeavour and we will be following their progress over the coming months.
