The President proposes the main charities supported each year
2010/11

Skillway's aim is to raise the self-esteem and motivation of teenagers through apprentice-style teaching of manual skills in its own workshops by skilled craftsmen. The pressure of academic work under the National Curriculum and the implications of League Tables can lead many students to undervalue themselves. By achieving certificates that can lead to NVQ or Accreditation under the Open College Network from one or more of our programmes, Skillway hopes to change this by encouraging the concept that success can lead to success.

President Ian Smith nominated Skillway as the Club’s main charity of his year. Skillway is a beneficiary of the Warehouse Christian Trust which was the Club’s chosen charity 2003/4. Club members have also been tutors at Skillway.

Ian Bowell nominated The Samson Centre as his chosen charity. The Samson centre was opened in 2005 for suffers of MS (Multiple Sclerosis, a progressive unpredictable disease of the central nervous system which causes spasmodic numbness through to paralysis) by giving both the suffers and their carers’ practical and emotional support.  Initially accepting 40 members, this has now risen to a staggering 140!
The charity has managed to raise sufficient capital to build new premises, diversify available treatments and more than treble its membership.
The charity provides one-to-one and group physiotherapy sessions as well as supervised fitness instruction, specialist talks and the provision of drop-in clinics with an MS Clinical Practitioner supplied by the Royal Surrey Hospital. Samson stresses that they remain continually grateful to local groups such as the Rotary Club of Godalming Woolsack for their ongoing support. This enables them to further improve the facilities and provide more treatment rooms, a larger more efficient BOT facility and more private counselling facilities. Their success has simply amazed us all!
2009/2010
Other Charities
Each year the club supports a wide range of other charities and worthy causes. Some are international, especially following major disasters such as earthquakes, but most are local.
In 2010-11, the club raised and donated over £10,000. Apart from Skillway, we supported the Rotary Foundation, including the Japan Earthquake Appeal, Pakistan Appeal and the Polio Plus Appeal, Shelterbox,  The Clockhouse, Green Oaks School and a number of other small, local causes.

2011/12
This year President Tony has nominated four local charities, the largest of which, The Prostate Project, has national importance. The Prostate Project supports RSCH Guildford, St Luke’s Cancer Centre and Frimley Park Hospital in funding equipment and specialist nurses for the detection and treatment of prostate cancer.
The club is also supporting the Sport Godalming Go for Gold champions fund to provide additional support to Olympic hopefuls from the Godalming area.
Country Mice is a Charitable Trust based in Milford and supporting patients who are terminally ill.
The club will also continue its support for Skillway for another year.
